On my mac:

  1. Open AVCHD file with Quicktime 10
  2. Select all clips and open
  3. For each opened clip, select File Export…
  4. Press return to save default “movie” format (does not transcode) (you can save to somewhere else here, if desired. I like to move them all when I’m done.)
  5. In finder, all the saved movies will be inside the AVCHD package, which you can view and move by selecting the AVCHD file, right-clicking, and selecting “show package contents”

Here’s a list of good sizes to use when scaling down a 16:9 image:

Also note that Adobe Media Encoder doesn’t allow odd numbers in it’s dimensions for mp4 files. It will round your dimensions and add black pixels to the edge of the movie. For mp4s in AME, only use dimensions where they’re both even numbers (e.g. INVALID dimension: 464 x 261)

Don’t forget that if Quicktime is asking for a codec, you can look in the Info (command-i) about the movie to find out which codec it wants. (e.g. Meridian, DV100, etc.)

Codecs go in ComputerName/Library/Quicktime
